Welcome to ANZCA
Mary’s research agenda integrates organisational and health communication with wellbeing of older people and especially older Māori—kaumātua—in Aotearoa New Zealand. Committed to working to address health inequities, she has partnered with health communication, Māori community, and Māori studies researchers in several externally funded research projects to study kaumātua identified issues related to health and wellbeing. Such research includes kaumātua peer support in managing transitions in later life; kaumātua housing; and kaumātua models of communication in palliative care. Mary is currently a member of the Ageing Well National Science Challenge, Strategic Advisory Group. She made a mid-career shift to academia, having formerly worked in health social work, community development, and organisational development. Mary has had a longstanding interest in elder organisation and the role of every-day organisations in wellbeing in later life. For more see Mary at Waikato.
